Celebrities Pray for Safety of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370

Celebrities Pray for Safety of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 thumbnail
The disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 early on March 8 remains a mystery. On its way to Beijing from Kuala Lumpar, the airplane suddenly vanished from radar screens somewhere over the seas in between Malaysia and Vietnam. Several Asian artists from Malaysia, China, and Taiwan continue to pray for the flight’s safety, hoping there would be a miracle.
Malaysian artists including Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊), Vivien Yeo (楊秀惠), Angelica Lee (李心潔), Fish Leung (梁靜茹), Victor Wong (品冠) and Shila Amzah (茜拉) were hit with grief after learning of the missing aircraft. Currently working abroad, Michelle expressed her condolences to the flight’s passengers and crew members. Vivien admitted feeling extremely sorrowful about the incident. With her career based in Hong Kong, she had visited her home country during Lunar New Year to wish family and friends safety. Angelica hopes for a miracle, while Fish and Victor spread words of prayer on their Weibo accounts. Shila felt extremely uncomfortable about the incident and shared how she constantly took flight MH370 in the past.
Other Chinese artists also expressed their concerns for those affected and told everyone to not give up their hopes. Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明) wrote on his Weibo blog, “This news has caused much worry, and I really hope everyone is safe and sound. I hope everyone can take good care of their emotions and never give up on hope! Praying for everyone’s peace!”
Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) uploaded a photograph of two lit candles and commented, “A day of sorrow!” Hong Kong actress, Ada Choi (蔡 少芬), also posted on her Weibo blog, “Why hasn’t the missing airplane been found…Lord have mercy, wishing there is a miracle and also have peace and strength for the families [waiting] on the ground. So sad, so heartbroken, so much sorrow.”
Taiwanese artists including Rainie Yang (楊丞琳), Leehom Wang (王力宏), Yoga Lin (林宥嘉), Valen Hsu (許茹蕓), and Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛) left similar messages of prayer on their blogs. Rainie wrote, “My god…praying that there is peace.” Likewise, Yoga expressed, “Hoping the missing airplane can make it home safely. Give their family members some space. We don’t need to be onlookers toward their grief.”
Leehom, who just flew to Kuala Lumpar from Beijing last week, felt extremely sympathetic. He admitted, “I find it so hard to believe the news I’m hearing. I constantly take that flight, and just did so last week. Praying for all the passengers and crew members!” Barbie wrote, “Please do not make up rumors. Everyone is worried, and please consider the feelings of their family members. Wishing for the passengers’ safety.” Valen also expressed, “Praying for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight’s family members and friends. Hope a miracle can happen! Showing support together!”

Raymond Lam’s Ex-Lover, Mavis Pan, Spotted with New Rich Boyfriend

Raymond Lam’s Ex-Lover, Mavis Pan, Spotted with New Rich Boyfriend thumbnail
Mavis Pan (潘霜霜), the former girlfriend of Raymond Lam (林峯), was recently sighted shopping with new boyfriend, Michael Xue (薛焜), the heir of the Shenzhen jewelry business, Bo Fook.
On March 6, 26-year-old Mavis and 27-year-old Michael were seen shopping at Elements, a large mall located in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui. The two first stopped by the trendy fashion store Y3, where Mavis spent approximately 15 minutes searching for a set of hats and dresses. While Michael paid, Mavis went to Givenchy – a store across the hall – and picked out a set of clothes for Michael to try out.
Mavis and Michael were seen hugging intimately and linking arms throughout their shopping date, but the two kept a noticeable distance from each other in crowded places. Mavis appeared shocked when she spotted reporters. Speeding up her walking, Mavis dismissed the reporters’ questions and said, “Ah, don’t take photos!”
Asked if Mavis has heard of the marriage rumors between Raymond Lam and Karena Ng (吳 千語), Mavis quickly said, “It has nothing to do with me!” Asked if Michael is Mavis’ current boyfriend, Mavis said, “We are friends!”
Michael, the heir and general manager of Shenzhen’s Bo Fook jewelry company, studied in the United States before returning to his family business in 2009. Established in 1989, Bo Fook is the supplier for over a thousand jewelry stores. Bo Fook has also opened over 300 “Baohengda” jewelry stores and counters. The company has also recently opened a hotel.
In addition, Michael is also a racing driver, and won first place at last year’s Pan Delta Super Racing Festival, representing Shenzhen.

Berlin Film Festival Winner “Black Coal, Thin Ice” to Set off Fireworks on March 21

Berlin Film Festival Winner “Black Coal, Thin Ice” to Set off Fireworks on March 21 thumbnail
Detective romance film, Black Coal, Thin Ice <白日焰火>, which won the highest award at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, recently released its latest trailer. The movie, which stars mainland Chinese actor Liao Fan (廖凡) and Taiwanese actress Gwei Lun Mei (桂綸鎂), is slated to open in theaters on March 21.
Black Coal, Thin Ice is the story of laundromat worker Wu Zhizhen (Gwei Lun Mei), whose husband (Wang Xuebing 王學兵) was killed and dismembered five years ago. Now a series of similarly grisly murder cases have cropped up, and the dismembered victims all have one thing in common: each one is an ex-boyfriend of Zhizhen.
In order to uncover the truth, police officer Zhang Zili (Liao Fan) volunteers to get close to Zhizhen, even though he had previously been injured when dealing with her husband’s case five years prior. But as he grows close to her, they fall in love and must wrestle with the truth of the crime together.
Despite being director Diao Yinan’s (刁亦男) third feature film and his first directing endeavor in seven years, Black Coal, Thin Ice won critical acclaim at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival, where it snagged the prestigious Golden Bear Award, given to the best film of the year. The last time a mainland Chinese film won the Golden Bear was in 2007, with the film Tuya’s Marriage <圖雅的婚事>.
Liao Fan also picked up the Silver Bear for Best Actor, making him the first mainland Chinese actor to win the award. During his acceptance speech, he thanked his costar Gwei Lun Mei for “igniting that group of fireworks and giving warmth to that winter.”
The film’s Chinese title, which translates to “Daytime Fireworks,” is a testament to the greatest miracles in life, according to the director. To him, one must be extremely determined to set off fireworks during the daytime. As a result, these fireworks may be more beautiful than those seen at night, and thus be more filled with hope, warmth, and recovery.

Louis Koo Makes AV Star Appearance in “Naked Ambition 2”

Louis Koo Makes AV Star Appearance in “Naked Ambition 2” thumbnail
Louis Koo (古天樂) will be making a guest appearance in the new Hong Kong category III 3D film, Naked Ambition 2 < 3D 豪情>, a sex parody film that stars Chapman To (杜汶澤), Josie Ho (何超儀), and Japanese AV actor Taka Katō. He will be having numerous bed scenes with popular AV actress Kana Yume.
Louis, one of the producers of Naked Ambition 2, starred in the original Naked Ambition film in 2003, which was Louis’ first film as producer. He originally did not plan on investing in Naked Ambition 2, but after director Chan Hing Ka (陳慶嘉) showed him the script of the film, Louis decided that the movie was worth an investment.
Portraying the prostitute “Kong Moon Louis Koo” in his recent cameo appearance of Sandra Ng’s (吳君如) sex comedy Golden Chicken sss <金雞SSS>, Louis decided to continue his running porn star gag with his guest appearance in Naked Ambition 2. Louis traveled to Japan last November to film his short sequence with well-known AV idol actress Kana Yume and other popular Japanese AV actresses.
Louis praised the actresses’ professionalism and said, “They are really open. They’re very into it and they are giving it their all. It’s like they think they’re filming an AV. After filming one take, I had to get our translator to tell [Kana Yume] to be not so extreme!”
Chapman To Was Aroused by Sex Scenes
On the other hand, lead star Chapman To said he admires the crew members’ strong willpower while working on such a risqué and sexually suggestive film. There was one particular scene in which a male crew member had to stand in front of a half-naked Anri Okita for a few hours and had to support her from falling down her chair. “The crew had it the hardest!” said Chapman.
Asked if anything had “turned stiff” while working with the AV actresses, Chapman said, “Of course. It is a biological reaction and something that we have no control over. In fact, [the AV actresses] would be worried if I didn’t have a reaction. They would think that they’ve done something incorrect or wrong.”

Indian arms imports almost triple China, Pakistan: study

India remains the biggest buyer of arms in the world, importing nearly three times as many weapons as its nearest competitors China and Pakistan over the last five years, a Swedish think tank said.
Indian Army tanks take part in the Republic Day parade in
New Delhi on January 26, 2014
The total volume of arms sales was up 14 percent in 2009-13 compared to the previous five years, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Indian imports of major weapons rose by 111 percent in the last five years compared to 2004–08. Its share of total global arms imports increased from 7 to 14 percent, SIPRI said.
India replaced China as the world's biggest arms buyer in 2010. With its domestic defence industry struggling to manufacture high-tech arms, India is in the midst of a defence spending binge as it struggles to keep up with better-equipped Chinese forces and a range of military challenges in its volatile neighbourhood.
The main supplier of arms to India in 2009-13 was Russia, accounting for 75 percent of all imports -- reflecting India's need to upgrade and modernise weapons systems dating back to their close relationship during the Cold War.
India has lately sought to diversify its sources, looking particularly to the United States.
Figures from IHS Jane's released in February showed that India became the biggest buyer of US weapons last year -- with total imports worth $1.9 billion, and a string of large-scale purchases including Boeing's C-17A transport aircraft and P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
In 2009-13, however, the US still accounted for only 7 percent of India's purchases according to SIPRI.
India's traditional rival Pakistan increased its weapons acquisitions by 119 percent, growing from 2 percent of the global total to 5 percent during that period.
The five largest arms suppliers worldwide between 2009 and 2013 were the United States (29 percent of global exports), Russia (27 percent), Germany (7 percent), China (6 percent) and France (5 percent).
They collectively accounted for 74 percent of total arms exports, SIPRI said.
The world's top five arms importers were now India, China, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
"Chinese, Russian and US arms supplies to South Asia are driven by both economic and political considerations," said Siemon Wezeman, senior researcher with the SIPRI Arms Transfers Programme.
"In particular, China and the USA appear to be using arms deliveries to Asia to strengthen their influence in the region," Wezeman said.
Arms exports to Africa between 2004-08 and 2009-13 jumped 53 percent. The three largest importers in the region were Algeria, Morocco and Sudan.
Imports by European nations decreased by 25 percent between 2004–2008 and 2009–13.
Britain was the largest importer of major weapons in Europe (receiving 12 percent of deliveries), followed by Azerbaijan (12 percent) and Greece (11 percent).

CPP wants leash on watchdogs

The ruling party wants “biased” election watchdogs to be on a tight leash by the next election and wants the opposition to agree to it, senior Cambodian People’s Party lawmaker Cheam Yeap said yesterday ahead of the third meeting of a bipartisan election reform committee this morning.
Despite mudslinging between the ruling and opposition parties last week that at one point saw Cambodia National Rescue Party leader Sam Rainsy pledge to walk away from talks and hold more demonstrations, the CPP has agreed to discuss the opposition’s key demand of National Election Committee reform, Yeap said.A man casts his vote as an election official supervises at a polling station in Phnom Penh
But in return, the ruling party wants election-monitoring NGOs, whose documenting of poll irregularities bolstered the opposition’s rejection of the July election, to come under increased scrutiny via a long-gestating law on NGOs and associations.
On Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Bin Chhin, head of the CPP’s negotiating team, replied to a letter from his opposition counterpart, Son Chhay, agreeing that the “reform of electoral institutions” could be added to the election reform framework the committee is tasked with preparing.
He added, however, that the “neutrality and honesty of civil society groups [working on] election” would also have to be on the table.
The CPP had already raised the issue during last week’s meet, but it was dismissed by the CNRP’s Chhay as “ridiculous”.
Yesterday, Yeap confirmed that his party wanted the NGO law to specifically target the neutrality of election watchdogs.
“I would like to inform [the public] that a number of civil society groups were involved in election observation. They alleged that irregularities occurred and protested that we had robbed the ballots. Therefore, we want to create a law that ensures their neutrality,” he stated.
“I won’t name them, but some civil society groups have taken sides and become a tool of the opposition party or even played a more active role against the ruling party than the opposition [does].”
Earlier this month, a senior Interior Ministry official told the Post that civil society groups would no longer be consulted on the NGO law.
In January, the Council of Ministers’ Press and Quick Reaction Unit released a booklet addressing findings made by the Electoral Reform Alliance, an umbrella group of election watchdogs, in a post-election report.
“It is clear that the authors of the Joint-Report are talented experts having knowledge concerning elections and experience in tricky writing to mislead readers concerning the electoral process,” it said, adding that, conspicuously, the report was released at the same time the CNRP decided to hold daily demonstrations.
“It was produced to discredit the 2013 electoral process by manipulations and fabrications, aiming to bring its readers to view the electoral system in Cambodia as not fair … misleading the public into believing that this is the reason behind the CNRP’s loss.”
Preap Kol, executive director at Transparency International Cambodia (TIC), a key contributor to the ERA report, said yesterday that he was “surprised that the CPP considers [this issue] equally important as the reform of the [NEC]”.
While NGOs like TIC are bound by principles of transparency and integrity that guarantee their financial funding, he said that a “small number of NGOs might have a political agenda”.
But Kol added that the government’s focus on the NGO law at this time implied a clear agenda on its part “to suppress civil society organisations”.
Hang Puthea, executive director of election monitoring group NICFEC, also a contributing member to the ERA, said that he welcomed an NGO law that would crack down on errant organisations, because he was confident that the ERA groups were all impartial.
Meanwhile, the CNRP’s Chhay said he hoped that the CPP would stop “playing around” in today’s discussions by outlining all the issues they want to reform, even if that includes the “irrelevant” NGO law, so the committee can push forward.
“I want them to put it all on the table.… We aren’t going to waste our time arguing with them what issues are for discussion or not.… Put everything and take all those issues to debate at a workshop,” he said.
He added, however, that any public consultation would dismiss NGO impartiality as a non-issue.
“The CPP have a kind of a problem regarding any organisations who dare to find the facts about the wrongdoing of this government. To report on this is [to be] considered as the enemy.”

Prince’s party progressing

Former Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh made his bid to return to politics official yesterday, signing papers to be sent to the Ministry of Interior today to seek registration and recognition for his new political party.
In a closed-door meeting with around 300 supporters in Phnom Penh’s Sunway Hotel, Ranariddh signed the papers, which he will send to Interior Minister Sar Kheng so that his new Community of Royalist People’s Party (CRPP) can take part in the next election.Prince Norodom Ranariddh talks to media outside Sunway Hotel in Phnom Penh
In a press conference after the meeting, Ranariddh, who ruled in a coalition government with Prime Minister Hun Sen from 1993 to 1997, said he is returning to politics because the Cambodian People’s Party and Cambodia National Rescue Party are failing to find solutions to the country’s problems.
“The party A, I will not join; the party B, I also will not join. But I have always prepared [my]self to work with any party that has [a] vision to resolve national problems the same as my party [does],” Ranariddh said.
The one-time political arch-rival of Hun Sen hit out at CNRP leaders Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha for posing a threat to the “royalist regime” and urged the opposition to take its seats in the National Assembly.
“I dare to say … that if he [Rainsy] is elected … he would end the royalist regime,” Ranariddh said.
CNRP vice president Kem Sokha scoffed at the rhetoric.
“We will not [listen to] his ideas, citizens also will not allow us to [listen to] his ideas,” Sokha said.
Political analyst Kem Ley said that Ranariddh’s “unclear politics” when he was in power will stand in the way of the success of the new party and that the only way for him to return would be to join the CNRP.
CNRP lawmaker-elect Yim Sovann agreed.
“There are only two political parties in the country … it will stay this way,” he said, adding that the creation of the party will not stand in the way of the CNRP’s goals. “We [the CNRP] are in their hearts. They [the CRPP] have the right to form a party and people have the right to choose the CNRP.”

Pol Pot’s daughter weds

To a passing stranger, the distant sound of music may have hinted at just another celebration in a typically busy wedding season fast drawing to a close.
But this was no ordinary wedding. The biggest crowd that some villagers could ever recall seeing in Banteay Meanchey’s Malai district was gathered yesterday to witness the wedding of a woman whose genealogy will forever remain notorious across the country and, indeed, the world.
Pol Pot’s daughter, Sar Patchata, was getting married.Sar Patchata (right) and Sy Vicheka hold ceremonial items during their wedding ceremony
Rows of luxury cars lined a field in Malai commune’s Kbal Spean village, a former Khmer Rouge stronghold. Assembled inside the wedding party were officials from as far away as Phnom Penh. Alongside them were former Khmer Rouge soldiers who had travelled a much shorter distance to attend and whose friendships with each other went back decades.
“It’s a good opportunity,” said Ros Ka, a former Khmer Rouge soldier who spent years fighting with forces loyal to Pol Pot and who was enjoying the chance to see some of his former comrades for the first time in years. “We can meet with the seniors after we have lived apart for years. You don’t know how delighted we are.”
Not everyone could make it to this reunion, he added, because they simply couldn’t afford the journey.
Patchata, 26, is the only daughter of Pol Pot, the former Khmer Rouge leader responsible for an estimated 1.7 million deaths during Democratic Kampuchea’s brutal agrarian-based dictatorship of 1975 to 1979.
Patchata’s mother, Mea Son, married Pol Pot – whose real name was Saloth Sar – in the mid 1980s after he fled Phnom Penh and was waging bloody war from the Cambodian-Thai border.
Following Pol Pot’s death in 1998 while under house arrest, Son, then 40, told the Post that the brutal dictator had treated her and his only daughter, then known as Mea Sith, well right until the end.
“He was a good husband to me; we met in 1985,” she said. “I am very sad that he has died and I do not know what the future may bring.”
The future was equally uncertain for Patchata. Photos at the time showed a young girl’s grief as she stood beside her mother and her father’s jailer, staring through a long black fringe. Yesterday, that same face – which bears a resemblance to her father’s – beamed as the cameras captured her at every turn.

Tep Khunnal, a former Malai district governor, adviser to Pol Pot and member of the Khmer Rouge delegation to the UN in the 1980s, married Patchata’s mother after the dictator’s death, and brought them to live in the district.
“Khunnal has raised her since she was 10 after Pol Pot died,” said Chen Nat, one of Khunnal’s colleagues.
After earning a master’s degree in English literature in Malaysia, where she met her Cambodian husband-to-be Sy Vicheka, Patchata returned to her home three years before the wedding, Nat said.
“She said she will not go to live or work anywhere else now and will stay here to run her uncle and aunt’s rice mill.”
Suong Sikoeun, a former spokesman and high-ranking official in the Ministry of Information and Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the Democratic Kampuchea era, said those who attended the wedding yesterday remained part of a strong community.
“It’s not a meeting of politics,” he said. “It is a show of friendship … [Pol Pot’s] daughter is not mired in politics. We love and respect each other as one and help one another.”
The celebrations had all the pomp expected of a Cambodian wedding. Just after dawn, couples with trays of fruit formed a procession that slowly made its way to the bride’s house.
Wedding guest Meas Chey spoke of her connection with the bride. Just days after Patchata was born, Chey gave birth to a child in the same camp hospital as Pol Pot’s wife.
“I don’t know her very well anymore,” she said. “When she finished high school, she went to study in Phnom Penh. But I know she is … very different from her father.”
By the afternoon, friends and relatives were offering the married couple thousands of dollars in cash and gifts – Son offered her daughter a gold necklace – as the couple prepared for a new life together.

Malaysia doubles scale of plane search, pilots probed

Malaysia said on Sunday the number of countries involved in efforts to find a missing passenger jet had nearly doubled to 25 as it began a new push to find the plane across a vast arc of land and ocean.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia said Sunday the number of countries searching for a missing airliner had nearly doubled to 25 as a full-scale criminal probe into its disappearance got under way, with particular scrutiny of the pilots.
Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the number of participating countries had jumped from 14 to 25 as the search for the aircraft focused on two vast, and vastly contrasting, land and ocean transport corridors.
The dramatic "re-calibration" would inevitably bring "new challenges of coordination and diplomacy", the minister said.
Police said they had searched the homes of both pilots and examined the captain's home flight simulator after it became increasingly clear that the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 that vanished March 8 had been deliberately diverted by someone on board.
Hishammuddin cautioned people against "jumping to conclusions" about the thrust of the investigation, which national police chief Khalid Abu Bakar stressed was covering "all" the 239 passengers and crew.
Engineers who may have had contact with the aircraft before take-off were also being looked at, Khalid said.
The police action followed Saturday's startling revelations that the plane's communications systems had been manually switched off before the jet veered westward and flew on for hours.
Like Prime Minister Najib Razak the previous day, Hishammuddin refused to use the word hijack, saying only that the pattern of events was consistent with "deliberate action" by someone on the plane.
The new search parameters involve two possible flight corridors -- a northern one stretching from Thailand to Kazakhstan and a southern one from Indonesia towards the southern Indian Ocean.
The Malaysian foreign ministry briefed representatives from 22 countries on Sunday, including the central Asian states of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan, and requested support in the form of satellite and radar data.
For anguished relatives, the news the plane had been diverted was a double-edged sword -- holding out the slim hope that hijackers had landed the plane somewhere, while ushering in another agonising open-ended waiting period.
Relatives of Bob and Cathy Lawton, a missing Australian couple, said they were horrified by the notion of a drawn-out hijack ordeal.
"That's one of the worst things I could have hoped for," Bob's brother David Lawton told News Limited newspapers.
"Even if they are alive, what did they have to put up with?"
The scope for speculation is as broad as the new search area.
Experts said it would have taken specialist knowledge to disable the communications system, intensifying scrutiny of Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and his First Officer, Fariq Abdul Hamid.
Friends and colleagues of both pilots have testified to their good character, but questions have been raised over the simulator Zaharie installed at home -- even though aviation commentators have said this is not uncommon.
Fariq's record was queried after a woman said he had allowed her and a friend to ride in the cockpit of an earlier flight.
Hishammuddin noted that the two pilots "did not ask to fly together" on the missing plane.
The alternative scenario -- that the cockpit was taken over or the pilots coerced -- opens a pandora's box of possibilities as to who might be involved and why.
Two passengers who boarded the plane with stolen EU passports have been identified as Iranians by Interpol, who said they were most likely illegal immigrants who did not fit terrorist profiles.
The fact that most of the passengers on board the Beijing-bound flight were Chinese has raised speculation of involvement by militants from China's Muslim ethnic Uighur minority.
Security experts warned against reading too much into partial data.
"We still really don't have a lot of evidence to go on," said Anthony Brickhouse, a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators.
"We don't have any wreckage, we don't have the plane itself, we don't have a lot of electronic data from the aircraft."
The last satellite communication from the plane on March 8 came nearly eight hours after it took off -- around the time the airline has said it would have run out of fuel.
Hishammuddin said both search corridors were being treated "with equal importance", but a number of analysts said the southern ocean route was more likely.
Flying along the northern corridor would have required the plane to travel undetected through numerous national airspaces in a strategically sensitive region.
"I just can't think of a scenario where this aircraft is sitting on a runway somewhere," said Brickhouse.
Scott Hamilton, managing director of US-based aerospace consultancy Leehman Co, said a crash in the ocean would present a daunting search and recovery challenge.
"Any floating debris will be widely dispersed and the main debris on the sea floor," he said.

Pilots' homes searched, flight simulator examined: Malaysia

Malaysia's government said on Sunday that police had searched the homes of the two pilots of a missing airliner and were examining the captain's home flight simulator, but cautioned it was "normal" procedure.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia said on Sunday that police had searched the homes of a missing airliner's two pilots and were examining the captain's home flight simulator, but warned against "jumping to conclusions".
"Police searched the home of the pilot on Saturday, 15 March," a statement by the transport ministry said, referring to Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53.
"Officers spoke to family members of the pilot and experts are examining the pilot's flight simulator."
The statement added: "On 15 March, the police also searched the home of the co-pilot."
Fariq Abdul Hamid, 27, was the co-pilot of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 which vanished eight days ago, sparking off a massive international search across a huge swathe of Asia.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Saturday the plane appeared to have been deliberately diverted from its flight path after it dropped off radar. He said satellites continued to detect it for hours afterwards, an announcement which raised fears of a hijack or rogue action by pilots or crew.
The revelation has prompted fresh scrutiny of the two pilots.
Zaharie is said to have assembled his own complex flight simulator at home but nothing has emerged to cast suspicion on him.
The government statement said engineers who may have had contact with Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 before it took off on March 8 were also part of the probe into the missing jet, but called this "normal procedure" for such an event.
"We appeal to the public not to jump to conclusions regarding the police investigation," it said.
It reiterated that all crew and passengers on board the flight were being investigated for possible leads. Nothing that suggests a motive had yet surfaced, it said.
The plane disappeared from civilian radar less than an hour into its journey from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
Najib also said investigators believe that systems relaying MH370's location to air traffic control were manually switched off before the jet veered westward.
An Australian television programme earlier broadcast an interview by a South African woman who alleged that she and a friend were invited into the cockpit of a 2011 flight co-piloted by Fariq, in breach of post-9/11 security rules.
The transport ministry in its statement also said that Malaysian officials are contacting countries along the northern and southern corridors about missing flight MH370.
The countries include Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, China, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and France, and officials are requesting assistance from them.
Malaysian officials are currently discussing with all partners on how best to deploy assets along the two corridors.
They are also asking countries to provide further assistance in the search for the aircraft, including satellite data and analysis, ground-search capabilities, radar data and maritime and air assets.
Both the northern and southern corridors are being treated with equal importance, said the statement.

Title-chasing Liverpool sink sorry United

Steven Gerrard scored two penalties as Liverpool closed to within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 3-0 win at beleaguered rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

MANCHESTER: Steven Gerrard scored two penalties as Liverpool closed to within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 3-0 win at beleaguered rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
Gerrard found the net from 12 yards either side of half-time before Luis Suarez added a third goal in the 84th minute to give Liverpool their first victory at Old Trafford in five years.
Gerrard should have had a hat-trick of spot-kicks, with a third penalty hitting the post after United captain Nemanja Vidic had been shown a second yellow card for felling Daniel Sturridge, but it was to prove anecdotal.
Gerrard said that the result proved that Liverpool were "genuine contenders" for the title, but although they have a game in hand on Chelsea, manager Brendan Rodgers sounded a note of caution.
"Our dominance in the match was clear," he said. "We could arguably have scored five or six and that is testament to the quality of the players.
"But we won't get carried away. It is a wonderful result and our confidence is high at the moment, but our only focus is on the next game."
While Rodgers's side look more like potential champions with each display, United's season continues to unravel.
This was the defending champions' fifth home defeat of the campaign and having started the day 11 points below the Champions League places, their hopes of a top-four finish have been all but extinguished.
As a result, Wednesday's Champions League home game with Olympiakos now takes on crucial significance, but with United 2-0 down from the first leg of the last 16 tie, there could be more misery around the corner.
"It was important we came out in the second half and got a goal back, but instead we gave one away and that made it very difficult for us," said United manager David Moyes.
"It looks like we are a long way off (the top four). We are well aware of that, but we are going to keep fighting."
Moyes had admitted prior to the game that Liverpool's form "probably" made them favourites, but he will have been alarmed by the ease with which the visitors found holes in the hosts' defence.
There were fewer than three minutes on the clock when a Jordan Henderson pass down the inside-right channel set Sturridge free, but he shot wide with his weaker right foot.
United demonstrated plenty of commitment in the opening exchanges, with Phil Jones and Robin van Persie both flying into early challenges, but they had not mustered a shot worthy of the name by the time Liverpool went ahead in the 34th minute.
As Suarez looked to dink the ball past Rafael da Silva on the left-hand side of the area, the Brazilian jutted out a hand and referee Mark Clattenburg immediately awarded a penalty.
Having been booked for clattering Gerrard moments earlier, Rafael was fortunate to avoid a second yellow card, but the Liverpool captain showed no mercy from the spot to silence the catcalls from the Stretford End.
Liverpool's fans at the opposite end of the ground celebrated deliriously, and although United briefly rallied, with Wayne Rooney stinging Simon Mignolet's palms, there was more of the same to come.
Only 25 seconds of the second half had elapsed when Jones barged into Joe Allen after he had chested down a lofted pass from Henderson and Gerrard's second spot-kick, into the bottom-right corner, was again unerring.
After Van Persie had headed wide from a Rooney cross, Gerrard was handed an opportunity to complete a first ever hat-trick against United when Sturridge tumbled over Vidic's outstretched leg.
This time, however, his aim was slightly off, with the ball cannoning against the base of the left-hand post and away.
Liverpool were not finished though. Moments after being thwarted by a stunning save from David de Gea, Suarez ghosted in behind the hosts' flatfooted defence to roll home and make United's misery complete.

Ibra fires PSG past St Etienne, Monaco edge Lyon

Paris Saint Germain, fresh from progressing to the Champions League quarter-finals, have capped a profitable week with a 2-0 win over Saint Etienne.

PARIS: Paris Saint Germain, fresh from progressing to the Champions League quarter-finals, capped a profitable week with a 2-0 win over Saint Etienne on Sunday.
The Ligue 1 leaders' closest rivals Monaco had earlier cut the gap to five points after a controversial 3-2 win over Lyon in a game where the referee subsequently admitted to mistakes on all three of Monaco's goals.
But PSG regained their eight-point cushion on Claudio Ranieri's side with superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic putting the game to bed with two first half goals.
This latest stepping stone on what is becoming a relentless march to the French title extended PSG's unbeaten league run to 13 matches.
Coach Laurent Blanc brought back several players rested in midweek for the win against Bayer Leverkusen, including former St Etienne captain Blaise Matuidi.
St Etienne have developed a reputation as a bogey team for the French capital side but not on this occasion.
Ibrahimovic had PSG deservedly in front in the 14th minute, the Swedish striker rolling the ball in although St Etienne rounded on the referee claiming Matuidi had been offside.
The St Etienne goal continued to be the centre of attention as the hosts dominated, with Ibrahimovic doubling up four minutes from the break, prodding home Edinson Cavani's cross from the left having started the sweet move.
St Etienne emerged revitalised after the interval, Benjamin Corgnet thumping the ball into the side netting after Yohan Mollo's effort was blocked, then substitute Melvut Erding forcing PSG keeper Salvatore Sirigu into producing a deft save.
PSG, who lost Yohan Cabaye to injury, the former Newcastle midfielder replaced by Marco Verrati, eventually managed to reassert themselves to hold out for the win and move closer to sealing the championship.
Earlier Monaco saw off Lyon in a contentious game marked by a series of dubious calls from the referee who later conceded all Monaco's goals resulted from off-side situations.
For Lyon this result ended a five-match unbeaten run in the league and the former multiple French champions remain in fifth place.
Lyon, for the third match in a row, conceded a goal in the opening 10 minutes, this time Valere Garmain inflicting the damage after four minutes.
This was the first of referee Freddy Fautrel's mistakes as Garmain was set up by Dimitar Berbatov's back pass, with the Bulgarian striker clearly offside.
James Rodriguez doubled up for Monaco who once again was sent on his way by Berbatov in an off-side position after a cross from the right from Mounir Obbadi.
A dozen minutes after the restart Berbatov, offside when he picked up a cross, scored from close range.
Lyon had pulled one back after the half hour when Miguel Lopes on the right flank found Jimmy Briand, who gave Lyon hope of salvaging a point with 12 minutes left on the clock with his second.
Fautrel held his hands up to a bad day at the office, declaring: "We (he and his assistants) recognise mistakes were made by the refereeing team - three goals were off-side.
"I've got other bad memories of course but tonight is a very bad memory for me and my colleagues."
Lyon coach Remi Garde said: "I'm disappointed that the players weren't rewarded for their enthusiasm and solidarity and courage.
"I'm not going to talk about the referee as I'd risk being banned."
Ranieri commented: "As for the refereeing I think it was very hard today for us and for Lyon. But when a team scores three goals away from home it deserves to win."
Montpellier held Bordeaux to a 1-1 draw in Sunday's other game.

Seven up for Barca as Messi breaks another record

Four-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi became Barcelona's all-time leading goalscorer, including friendlies and unofficial matches, with a double against Osasuna on Sunday.

MADRID: Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick to become Barcelona's all-time record goalscorer as they cut the gap on La Liga leaders Real Madrid to four points ahead of their meeting next weekend with a 7-0 thrashing of Osasuna.
After a slow start, the hosts were sparked into life by Messi's opening goal as he flicked home at the near post from Alexis Sanchez's cross.
Sanchez was next on the scoresheet as he finished off a similar move involving Andres Iniesta and Jordi Alba before Iniesta's wonderful strike from 25 yards made it 3-0.
Messi then broke another record by registering his 370th Barca goal to overtake Paulinho Alcantara as the club's record marksman before rounding off his hat-trick in between further strikes from Cristian Tello and Pedro Rodriguez.
"To enter into the history of this club is spectacular," Messi told Barca TV.
"If you play in this team it is much easier. This group continues to do great things and I think it deserves to continue winning things."
Next up for Barcelona is a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu next Sunday and Messi is sure they can get themselves back into the title race by ending Madrid's five-month unbeaten run in all competitions.
"I hope we see a good version of Barcelona and we can get a positive result, which we need to still be in there fighting for La Liga just a point behind.
"We have a unique opportunity to cut the gap on Madrid. It will be a very difficult game because we are playing away from home and Real Madrid is a great team playing with a lot of confidence. It will be difficult but it all depends on us."
Amazingly, Barca had to withstand a bright opening from Osasuna as Victor Valdes produced a great save to deny Emiliano Armenteros and Oriol Riera was rightly flagged offside as he put the rebound into the net.
However, the Catalans opened the scoring 10 minutes later when Sanchez was fed by Xavi and Messi got across his man to delicately touch home the Chilean's low cross.
Sanchez should have doubled his side's advantage two minutes later when he chipped over with just Andres Fernandez to beat, but the former Udinese man made amends when he side-footed home after a lovely one-two between Alba and Iniesta opened up the Osasuna defence.
Iniesta then made it 3-0 with just his second goal of the season 11 minutes before half-time with a sweetly struck left-footed effort that flew into the top corner.
Fernandez was forced into fine saves from Dani Alves and Xavi to ensure Barca didn't go in even further ahead at the break.
Osasuna should have got themselves back in the game early in the second-half as Riera and Roberto Torres failed to hit the target when presented with clear sights of goal.
They were soon further behind, though, as Messi slammed home Iniesta's cut-back just after the hour mark to surpass Alcantara's 369 goals in 357 games between 1912 and 1927.
Substitute Tello got his side's fifth goal with virtually his first touch as he whipped the ball into the far corner from just outside the area.
Messi fittingly sealed his hat-trick as he received Dani Alves' pass before easily side-footing in from close range for his 31st goal of the season.
And Messi then teed up Pedro to make it 7-0 in stoppage time with a neat low finish past Fernandez.

Rosicky sinks Spurs to boost Arsenal title bid

Tomas Rosicky fired Arsenal back into the Premier League title race with a quick-fire strike that clinched a 1-0 win over north London rivals Tottenham.

LONDON: Tomas Rosicky fired Arsenal back into the Premier League title race as the Czech midfielder's quick-fire strike clinched a crucial 1-0 win over north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.
Arsene Wenger's side began the weekend seven points behind Chelsea, but they moved to within four points of the leaders -- with a game in hand -- thanks to Rosicky's winner after just 72 seconds.
The Czech midfielder's goal, and the gritty defensive display that followed it, secured Arsenal's first league win at White Hart Lane since 2007 in Wenger's 999th match in charge.
The third placed Gunners feared their title challenge was fading after a defeat at Stoke, but they are firmly back in the race and a titanic encounter against Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side looms at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
"It's a huge result because we were under pressure to win before the game," Wenger said.
"Tottenham played well and sometimes we were under pressure, so we needed some special resilience to get away with it. It's three massive points."
Tottenham's third successive defeat was harsh on Tim Sherwood's fifth placed team, who look to have blown their chances of qualifying for the Champions League via a top-four finish.
"First and foremost, I wanted the performance. We got that but we didn't get the result," Sherwood said.
"The fans won't be happy with that but anyone who has seen that performance will know we didn't deserve to lose."
Arsenal had already defeated their hated neighbours twice this season and they were quickly back in the ascendancy thanks to a virtuoso contribution from the man nicknamed 'the little Mozart'.
Rosicky was only playing because of an injury to the club's record signing Mesut Ozil, but he took less than two minutes to make a more decisive contribution than the German has managed for months.
Rosicky seized possession near the halfway line after a Tottenham attack broke down and surged forward with real intent.
Tottenham were caught short-handed at the back and the Czech picked out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the edge of the penalty area.
Oxlade-Chamberlain couldn't control the ball, but it rolled fortuitously back to Rosicky and, although the angle didn't suggest the shot was on, he unleashed a ferocious half-volley that flashed into the top corner past the stunned Hugo Lloris.
It was just Rosicky's third club goal of the season, but Spurs will be sick of the sight of the 33-year-old, who also scored against them in the FA Cup third round.
Rosicky was pulling the strings and he produced a perfectly-weighted pass to put Oxlade-Chamberlain clean through on goal, but the midfielder chipped woefully wide with just Lloris to beat.
Tottenham threatened for the first time when Andros Townsend whipped over a teasing cross that just eluded Emmanuel Adebayor.
That provided a much-needed jolt of adrenaline for the hosts, who had made a lethargic start in unseasonably warm temperatures.
The mercury rose even higher when Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna escaped with only a booking from referee Mike Dean after clattering Danny Rose with a crude lunge.
Tottenham should have been level just after half-time when Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made a hash of a routine cross.
Szczesny tried to catch the ball one-handed but instead fumbled it to Nacer Chadli, yet Arsenal escaped as the Belgian winger shot tamely at Laurent Koscielny with the goal at his mercy.
Sherwood questioned his players' character after their thrashing at Chelsea last weekend, but he could have no complaints here.
Spurs were the dominant force and they went close twice in quick succession.
First Chadli flicked wide from Townsend's low delivery, then Adebayor rose highest to meet Nabil Bentaleb's cross but couldn't hit the target with his header.
Sherwood, involved in a row with Benfica boss Jorge Jesus in midweek, has cut a manic figure on the touchline as results have gone against him and he let his emotions get the better of him again when he threw the ball at Sagna in the closing stages.
The hosts kept pressing for an equaliser, but Arsenal, superbly marshalled by Koscielny, threw enough bodies in the way to repel the assault.

New names galore on Star Awards 20 Top 10 Most Popular Male/ Female Artistes award nominees list

his year's Star Awards Top 10 Most Popular Male/ Female Artistes award nominees list contained a large number of new names, including one rather surprising one.

It belongs to radio deejay Justin Ang, who is best known for hosting an English-language radio programme on 987FM.
Ang, one half of radio duo The Muttons, apparently managed to qualify for a shot at the award as he hosted the red carpet segment of the countdown show, which was simulcast on both Channel 5 and 8.
The Star Awards regulations state that anyone who has appeared in a local television programme on a Mandarin channel in the past year, and is currently a MediaCorp artiste, can qualify for a nomination.
Ang satisfied both criteria and was nominated for the award based on the results of a public survey conducted by a market research company.
Although Ang said he is aware that he got nominated on "a technicality", the radio host quipped that he is still hoping to win it and dedicate it to his wife, who "has always supported me and fell off the bed laughing" when he told her about his first Star Awards nomination.
His radio partner, deejay Vernon A, has since pledged to help him win it.
"He (Vernon A) is actually very supportive. In fact, he has vowed on our radio show to do everything in his power to help me win!
"He is going to kidnap (fellow nominees) Gurmit Singh, he is going to burn down Qi Yuwu's house, he is going to puncture Lee Teng's tyres and use his car to run over Elvin Ng!" joked Ang, before bursting into laughter.
" I don't condone it but I'm not going to do anything about it."
Not the usual suspects
Along with Ang, stars like Xu Bin, Ian Fang, Edwin Goh, Chris Tong and Zhang Zhen Huan have also been nominated for the Top 10 Most Popular Male/ Female Artistes awards for the first time as well.
As were Singapore actor Desmond Tan and actress Koh Ya Hui, who both entered showbiz after participating in the Star Search 2007 talent competition.
"I am happy ... but I'm also very calm," said Tan of his first-time nomination.
"Last year I was not nominated, even when a lot of people told me I was going to be nominated for sure. So I learned not to have too high hopes."
However, he revealed that he was especially excited that Koh had been nominated for the first time too, as they have grown to become great friends over the years.
Koh said the nomination took her completely by surprise.
"I couldn't believe it. I had to read the message (informing her that she had been nominated) a few times to get the message into my head.
"I have never received a message like that before!" gushed the actress, before adding that she is already very happy to get a nomination, though she would still love to take home a trophy.
"This is my first time getting nominated, so I hope I have 'beginner's luck'!"
The Star Awards turns 20
This year's Star Awards is a very special one, because it is the 20th installment of the glitzy awards show since its inception in 1994.
The Star Awards 20 - Show 1, which recognises the best behind-the-scenes production talents in the local Mandarin television industry, will be broadcast live on April 20, from 7pm on Channel 8.
Star Awards 20 - Show 2, which honours the best performing talents in the past year, will be held at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on April 27, and will be aired live from 5.30pm on Channel 8.
A complete list of the Top 10 Most Popular Male/Female Artistes award nominees can be found here.

Football: Dortmund shocked at home by 10-man Gladbach

Borussia Dortmund stay second in the Bundesliga despite slumping to a 2-1 defeat at home to ten-man Borussia Moenchengladbach.

BERLIN: Borussia Dortmund stay second in the Bundesliga despite slumping to a 2-1 defeat at home to ten-man Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday.
The result means runaway leaders Bayern Munich hosting fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena later, the European champions can extend their lead to 23 points with a 16th-straight league win.
Leverkusen are the last German team to win against Bayern - who are unbeaten in all of their 49 matches since - dating back to October 28, 2012.
Behind the scenes, Bayern have endured arguably the most turbulent week in the club's history after Uli Hoeness was convicted of major tax fraud on Thursday and resigned as club president 24 hours later.
If Bayern go 23 points clear, they could be confirmed Bundesliga champions next Saturday, if they pick up another three points and their rivals lose, to go 26 points clear with eight games left to play.
Gladbach earned their first win in ten games to dent Dortmund's confidence ahead of Wednesday's Champions League last 16 clash at home to Zenit St Petersburg when they hold a 4-2 lead from the first leg.
"That is a bitter result for us, so the disappointment is huge," said Dortmund captain Sebastian Kehl.
Dortmund are now just one point clear of third-placed rivals Schalke ahead of the Ruhr Valley derby on March 25.
"We could have a cushion behind us, now things are tight," admitted Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin.
Swiss coach Lucien Favre extended his Gladbach contract last week until 2017 and his side produced a devastating nine-minute first-half spell at Dortmund's Westfalenstadion.
"Don't worry, you'll still finish second in the league," Favre told Klopp after the final whistle.
Gladbach took the lead when a scuffed shot from Brazilian striker Raffael wrong-footed Dortmundgoalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller on 31 minutes after Patrick Herrmann got the better of Borussia defender Mats Hummels to fire in a cross.
The hosts doubled their lead five minutes before the break when Herrmann found Juan Arango and the Venezuelan put in a great final pass for Germany squad striker Max Kruse to fire home five minutes before the break.
Gladbach midfielder Havard Nordtveit was sent off for a second yellow card for the final 20 minutes and new-signing Milos Jojic pulled one back for Dortmund on 77 minutes.
Mainz moved up to fifth with a sensational 4-2 victory at Hoffenheim with Japan's Shinji Okazaki netting their last two goals as the guests scored three times in seven stunning second-half minutes to come from 2-0 down.
The win keeps Thomas Tuchel's Mainz in the hunt for a European spot next season and are only three points short of a Champions League berth.
Relegation-threatened VfB Stuttgart, with new coach Huub Stevens in charge, are winless in their last 10 matches as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Werder Bremen.
Stuttgart's Martin Harnik hammered a first-half penalty attempt off the post just before the break against his old club, but defender Georg Niedermeier gave the guests a 55th-minute lead.
Bremen's Germany midfielder Aaron Hunt fired home a direct free-kick on 79 minutes to share a point.
Wolfsburg drop to sixth after their 1-1 draw at bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig as only three points separate the bottom four clubs including Freiburg, Hamburg and Stuttgart.
Hertha's European aspirations suffered a dent as they lost 2-0 at home to Hanover 96 to stay ninth and four points off the top six.
On Friday, Schalke 04 moved up to third - an automatic Champions League spot - with a 2-1 win at Augsburg as Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice.
Having scored a hat-trick in last Saturday's 4-0 rout of Hoffenheim, Huntelaar took his tally to six goals in his last four games.
The victory is a welcome boost for the Royal Blues ahead of Tuesday's trip to Real Madrid where they face the near-impossible task of over-turning their 6-1 home leg defeat.

Football: Sunderland frustrated by Palace stalemate

Sunderland missed a chance to improve their Premier League survival prospects after being held to a 0-0 draw by fellow strugglers Crystal Palace.

SUNDERLAND, United Kingdom: Sunderland missed a chance to improve their Premier League survival prospects after being held to a 0-0 draw by fellow strugglers Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Gus Poyet's team were unable to turn their possession into goals in a tense clash at the Stadium of Light and they remain in the relegation zone, sitting three points adrift of safety following their third consecutive league match without a win.
Palace dropped to one place above the bottom three after their fourth successive game without a win.
With Sunderland desperate for a victory against one of their main rivals in the fight to beat the drop, Poyet made seven changes to the team beaten by Hull in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Oscar Ustari, Santiago Vergini, Andrea Dossena, Lee Cattermole, Jack Colback, Emanuele Giaccherini and Ignacio Scocco were axed as Vito Mannone, Wes Brown, Marcos Alonso, Liam Bridcutt, Ki Sung-Yueng, Adam Johnson and Fabio Borini returned.
Sunderland were quickly into their stride, with former Manchester City star Johnson at the heart of their best moments.
Johnson was a real menace to Palace left-back Joel Ward, who earned an early booking after chopping down the elusive winger.
The fierce wind whipping around the Stadium of Light made two already anxious teams even more hesitant in possession and there were few real chances in a scrappy first half.
Poyet's men were having the better of it but poor execution let them down on the rare occasions they had a sight of goal.
Steven Fletcher was unable to convert a miscued shot from Borini, while South Korea midfielder Ki blazed well wide from long-range.
Poyet sent on Jozy Altidore for Fletcher at half-time and the American striker came close to breaking the deadlock with a dipping shot that forced Julian Speroni to make a fine save.
Yannick Bolasie fired straight at Sunderland goalkeeper Mannone when Palace finally got through the Black Cats' defence after good work from Tom Ince.
Borini was denied by the woodwork when his powerful strike beat Speroni but cannoned back off the angle of bar and post.
And Palace fared no better when South African midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi dragged his shot wide from a good position inside the Sunderland penalty area.

Football: City trim Chelsea's lead, Fulham bite back

Manchester City survived the 10th-minute dismissal of captain Vincent Kompany to win 2-0 at Hull City and reduce Chelsea's lead in the Premier League to six points.

LONDON: Manchester City survived the 10th-minute dismissal of captain Vincent Kompany to win 2-0 at Hull City on Saturday and reduce Chelsea's lead in the Premier League to six points.
Kompany saw red for a last-man foul on Nikica Jelavic, but David Silva put City ahead with a glorious curling effort just four minutes later and Edin Dzeko made sure of victory at the death.
It was City's first league match for three weeks and they still have two games in hand on Chelsea, although the leaders can reassert their nine-point advantage with victory at Aston Villa later on Saturday.
City's success at the KC Stadium also saw them climb to second place above Liverpool, who visit Manchester United on Sunday, and Arsenal, who travel to Tottenham Hotspur later the same day.
"We needed to win today and playing with one player less for 80 minutes is very difficult, but I think we did a very good performance," said City manager Manuel Pellegrini, who saw his side eliminated from both the FA Cup and the Champions League earlier this week.
"We defended well with and without the ball, but we also attacked a lot. It was a very professional response from the players."
City were missing top scorer Sergio Aguero due to injury and they received a further setback in the 10th minute when Kompany was given his marching orders.
Jelavic appeared to foul Kompany as they jostled for possession, but play was allowed to continue and when the City captain hauled the Croatian down, referee Lee Mason immediately brandished the red card.
Kompany kicked out at a door in frustration as he stalked down the tunnel, but City reacted in stirring fashion, with Silva gathering a pass from Yaya Toure and arcing a beautiful shot inside the left-hand post from 25 yards.
Visiting right-back Pablo Zabaleta then saw a tremendous volley hit the bar and bounce on the goal-line, but Hull finished the first half strongly.
Jelavic had earlier put a volley wide from an Ahmed Elmohamady cross and after David Meyler had seen a goal ruled out for offside, Jake Livermore drilled a shot just off-target from long range.
Joe Hart saved from Shane Long, twice, and Jelavic early in the second period, while substitute George Boyd had a penalty appeal turned down after tumbling over a challenge by the City goalkeeper.
Fernandinho spurned a gilt-edged chance to double City's lead when he scuffed wide from only 10 yards, but Hart saved from Boyd and Jelavic to preserve the visitors' advantage.
Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor prevented Dzeko from putting the game to bed in the closing stages, but the Bosnian atoned in the last minute by sweeping home from Silva's incisive pass.
Kompany expressed his pride - and perhaps relief - via Twitter, writing: "Proud of the guys! Phenomenal shift they have put in again!"
Meanwhile, bottom club Fulham gave their chances of avoiding relegation a boost with a 1-0 win at home to Newcastle United that kept them four points from safety.
Ashkan Dejagah's swerving 68th-minute shot crept beneath visiting goalkeeper Tim Krul to consign Newcastle to defeat on the day manager Alan Pardew began a seven-game ban for headbutting Hull midfielder Meyler.
West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel tasted victory for the first time as an 85th-minute Youssouf Mulumbu goal saw his side complete a 2-1 comeback win at Swansea City that sent them three points clear of the drop zone.
Sunderland remain in the bottom three after a 0-0 draw at home to Crystal Palace, but they moved above Cardiff City, who fell to an injury-time Seamus Coleman strike in a cruel 2-1 defeat at Everton.
Goals from Morgan Schneiderlin, Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez and Sam Gallagher saw Southampton beat Norwich City 4-2, while Peter Odemwingie scored twice as Stoke City sank West Ham United 3-1 at the Britannia Stadium.

More regulation for Korean entertainment industry to protect aspiring stars

Korean authorities passed new legislation on Tuesday to better regulate the entertainment industry and protect aspiring stars.

SEOUL: The Korean government has passed new legislation on Tuesday to better regulate the entertainment industry and protect aspiring stars, reported Korean media.
Under the new law, anyone who wishes to set up a talent agency must now have a minimum of four years of experience in the entertainment industry.
Those who have a criminal record will be investigated before being allowed to do so.
New talent agencies will also require approval from Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism before they can recruit trainees.
In addition, there are new, stricter rules governing the treatment of trainees who are still minors.
These rules will prevent talent agencies from overworking younger trainees by disallowing training from 10pm to 6am daily, and capping the maximum number of hours of training they can undergo at 46 per week.
A Ministry spokesperson said these new rules will result in “a healthier entertainment industry” and help the overall pop culture develop “by restricting the number of agencies” in the industry.
Many Korean youth aspire to become entertainers because they perceive it to be a well-paying, glamorous job.
But achieving stardom is no easy task.
Trainees have to endure years of tough training, and may not even get the chance to make their showbiz debut.
Some may even fall prey to unscrupulous industry players.
In 2012, one talent agency CEO was arrested for sexually assaulting a number of his young female trainees.

Obama Calls for Overtime Pay Protection

U.S. President Barack Obama says he has ordered a review of the nation's overtime rules because too many Americans are working overtime and are not being paid for all the hours they work.

Obama said in his weekly address Saturday an overtime exception that was originally meant for highly paid employees now applies to workers who earn as little as $23,660 a year, making it possible for salaried workers to be paid less than the minimum wage.President Barack Obama signs a Presidential Memorandum to modernize overtime protections, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Mar. 13, 2014.

The president said his administration was "going to update those overtime rules" to restore the basic principle "that if you have to work more, you should be able to earn more."

President Obama said the country must "build an economy that works for everybody, nut just a fortunate few."In the Republican address, Congressman Bill Johnson from Ohio called on the president to protect senior citizens who he says are losing their long-term doctors because of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

Fifteen ‘gunned down’

Twelve Cambodians were shot dead by Thai security forces on March 5 after illegally crossing the border from Choam Ksan district in Preah Vihear province to log timber, Cambodian officials said yesterday.
Another three illegal loggers were killed on Wednesday and two others are still missing, military officials added.
Preap Thoeurth, a Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) intelligence officer at the border in Preah Vihear, said that Thai soldiers fatally shot 15 loggers near tiny Chheu Teal Kong village over the past two weeks, beginning with the carnage of March 5.
“This is the fourth or fifth time already that the Thai military fired at loggers so far this year,” he said. “Most of them are migrant villagers from Kampot and Kampong Speu.”
Another logger, who had crossed into Thailand on February 28, was sent back across the border by Thai forces on Wednesday, he added.
Pen Song, deputy military commander in Preah Vihear, confirmed the death tally, calling it “one of the biggest [fatal shooting] incidents” in memory, and accused the Thai military of breaching an agreement between the two sides not to use deadly force against loggers.
“When there is a meeting [with the Thai military], we always ask them to not shoot at the people while they cross the border,” he said. “We ask them to make arrests and fine [them], but they are never careful.”
Song added that local villagers are often turned back by RCAF border patrols, but migrant workers from other provinces often slip past them, hiding in forest and sneaking across the border.
Major General Phat Sophen, chief of the Cambodian-Thai Border Relations Office in Preah Vihear, said that he was informed of the shootings of loggers, but had not received confirmation from the Thais.
“I heard the information about the shooting,” he said. “But Thailand has yet to inform the Cambodian authorities about the shootings. Previously, if there is a shooting of Cambodian people, they [the Thai military] have sent information to us.”
Sophen added that his office received a letter from the Thai side on March 8 stating that they had arrested a Cambodian villager and he would face legal action, but the letter made no mention of an incident involving live fire.
Another deputy military commander for Preah Vihear, Colonel Meas Yoeun, said that soldiers under his watch had told him what happened.
“They used to climb a mountain in Kampot to collect resin [from trees], but when they came here and climbed the mountain for logging, they faced something horrible,” he said. “They knew that it was risky, but if they could cut some logs and bring them back, it would be like they had farmed land for a year.”
Preah Vihear coordinator for rights group Adhoc Lor Chan said that he received information about the shooting, but did not know exactly how many people were shot.
He urged the families of the victims to file complaints to his office so that he could write to the authorities to intervene.
“I just know there is a shooting, but do not have the details,” he said. “The victims are poor people, so they take risks to cross … with a guarantee from some officials that they will be safe – that’s why they take the risk.”
Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday referred questions about the incident to the military. The Thai military commander overseeing border affairs had not responded to a request for comment by press time.
At least 69 Cambodians were shot dead by Thai security forces last year, while 165 people were arrested or detained, according to the Ministry of Interior.
Ou Virak, an activist and former president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, said that, if the details of the shootings were confirmed, the Thai government should be held to account under international law.
“So many people have been dying in a similar fashion. It’s a serious, serious, human rights issue,” he said. “It’s a serious violation of international law, and the Thais need to be responsible and investigate, to make sure it won’t happen again.”
“Nobody deserves to die, to be shot for illegal logging. They need to try to address this from an international law perspective, and the Thai government needs to be held to account.… If they cannot, Thailand will become a failed state.”
